Third Sector



Third Sector is a young and innovative nonprofit consultancy redefining how government funds effective social services. We help clients connect funding with data on social outcomes in order to solve pressing challenges such as economic mobility for all and the well-being of children. Since 2011, we have helped over 40 communities in the United States implement increasingly effective social programs and transition hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to programs that measurably improve lives. We collaborate with our clients and stakeholders to define impact, draw actionable insights from data, and drive resources towards outcomes-oriented government. Our team of almost 50 people is based in San Francisco and Boston.



We are looking for highly driven, entrepreneurial, passionate, and rigorous professionals to join our fast-paced, innovative, and growing team. You will work closely with Managing Directors, Directors, and Managers, providing support on client engagements. You will play an integral role in pursuing business development opportunities, writing proposals, and designing and implementing internal initiatives driving Third Sector’s continued growth.

Your primary responsibility will be to support Managers in delivering client engagements focused on executing new Pay for Success (PFS) or outcomes-oriented contracts. Engagements may include beneficiary population analysis, government funding stream identification and analysis, data access analysis, economic modeling, readiness assessments, provider analysis, and contract and funding negotiations. Teams travel to client sites on average every other month, and collaborate closely with clients, data partners, and a variety of stakeholders committed to improving lives through social outcomes measurement. Most Associates are staffed on two client engagements at a time.

Third Sector’s hiring process is rigorous and may be different from hiring practices you have encountered before.  We practice “blind recruitment” as part of our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In practice, this means:

We evaluate candidates primarily through exercises and cases. This approach serves the dual purpose of providing candidates with a taste of our work and providing our recruitment team with insight into whether a candidate possesses the prerequisite skills and competencies for success in the role.

Our hiring process includes these steps:

  1. Short written application for initial screening.
  2. 25-minute case interview by phone to assess critical thinking skills.
  3. A written case followed by a 50-minute phone interview to assess critical thinking and client management skills.
  4. Reference request (résumé submitted for the first time).
  5. 50-minute phone interview with a member of Third Sector’s executive team to assess project management skills and culture fit.
  6. Final interview with a member of Third Sector’s executive team by video conference or in person.
  7. Offer issued.

We are committed to transparency throughout this process. We understand interviewing can be stressful and aim to minimize that stress and uncertainty. To give you a sense of timing, steps two through six above typically take five to seven weeks.
