WHO WE ARE
Third Sector is a young and innovative nonprofit consultancy redefining how government funds effective social services. We help clients connect funding with data on social outcomes in order to solve pressing challenges such as economic mobility for all and the well-being of children. Since 2011, we have helped over 40 communities in the United States implement increasingly effective social programs and transition hundreds of millions of taxpayer dollars to programs that measurably improve lives. We collaborate with our clients and stakeholders to define impact, draw actionable insights from data, and drive resources towards outcomes-oriented government. Our team of almost 50 people is based in San Francisco and Boston.


THE ROLE
We are looking for a driven, entrepreneurial, passionate, and rigorous professional to join our fast-paced, innovative, and growing team. You will work closely with Managing Directors, Managers, and Associates, providing leadership across multiple client engagements focused on executing new Pay-for-Success (PFS) or outcomes-oriented contracts. You will drive innovative problem solving for clients, manage complex client and stakeholder interactions, produce industry-enhancing thought leadership, and ensure excellence of client deliverables. You will pursue business development opportunities and write proposals that drive Third Sector’s continued growth. You will design and implement internal initiatives that support Third Sector’s people and the firm’s mission.

Client engagements typically include beneficiary population analysis, government funding stream identification and analysis, data access analysis, economic modeling, service provider analysis, new contract development, and contract and funding negotiations. Teams travel to client sites on average every other month and collaborate closely with clients, data partners, and a variety of stakeholders committed to improving lives through social outcomes measurement. Directors oversee two to four client engagements and one or more internal initiatives at a time. Depending on an engagement’s needs, you may at times act as a project manager.

OUR HIRING PROCESS
Third Sector’s hiring process is rigorous and may be different from hiring practices you have encountered before. We practice “blind recruitment” as part of our commitment to diversity, equity, and inclusion. In practice, this means:

We evaluate candidates primarily through exercises and cases. This approach serves the dual purpose of providing candidates with a taste our work and providing our recruitment team with insight into whether a candidate possesses the prerequisite skills and competencies for success in the role. Our hiring process includes these steps:

  1. A written application for initial screening.
  2. A timed written case followed by a 50-minute phone interview to assess critical thinking and project management skills.
  3. Two 50-minute phone interviews with members of Third Sector’s Executive Team to assess project management skills and culture fit.
  4. Reference checks (résumé reviewed for the first time).
  5. A final in-person interview with Third Sector’s CEO.
  6. Offer issued.

We are committed to transparency throughout this process. We understand interviewing can be stressful and aim to minimize that stress and uncertainty. To give you a sense of timing, steps two through six above typically take eight weeks.
